The Nelson Garden LED No.1 grow light is an energy-saving LED strip for pre-cultivation and indoor gardening. Designed specifically to provide supplemental lighting for seedlings and sensitive plants: it produces the light spectrum essential for plants while emitting very little heat — plants will not be damaged when near the lamp. The 60 cm long light strip illuminates an area of 75 × 30 cm at a distance of 10 cm. The PPFD value of 399 µmol/s/m² ensures efficient photosynthesis.

15 W LED grow light, 6400K (cool daylight). 600 mm strip. DC plug 3.0 × 6.3 mm — transformer included. Can be connected to a maximum of 2 light strips (No.2 extension strip, product no. 5568).

Compatibility and usage

Grow light vs. standard LED

The Nelson Garden No.1 produces the light spectrum essential for plants — especially blue light (approx. 450 nm), which promotes leaf and stem development. A standard household LED is optimized for the human eye, not for plant growth. The practical difference:

  • Standard LED: useful amount of light for plants is about 10–20% of the nominal lumen output
  • Grow LED (this product): up to 60–80% of the light is useful for photosynthesis

This makes the grow LED significantly more efficient compared to a standard lamp of the same size class.

Applications

  • Seedling pre-cultivation in spring — tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, herbs
  • Indoor gardening and windowsill cultivation year-round
  • Microgreens — sprouting shoots, lettuce
  • Supplemental light for houseplants in winter (low light in windows)
  • Aquaponic and hydroponic systems

Connecting — 2 lights in series

You can connect one additional light (No.2, product no. 5568) to this light as an extension. Combined lights cover a larger area:

  • 1 light strip: 75 × 30 cm
  • 2 light strips combined: 75 × 60 cm

No more than 2 additional lights can be connected in series — in that case, separate transformers are required.

Suitable distance above plants

Recommended distance is 10 cm for the illumination area mentioned above. If the lamp is moved further away:

  • The illumination area expands, but the amount of light per square meter decreases
  • At a 20 cm distance, the area is larger, but the PPFD is halved

Keep the lamp as close as possible without touching the plant leaves. Raise the lamp as the plants grow if necessary.

Usage time per day

Most plants benefit from 12–16 hours of light per day during pre-cultivation. Use a timer to regulate consistent cycles. Plants also need a dark period (for root and other biological processes).

Power: 15W

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

What is PPFD and why is it important in grow lights?

PPFD = Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density. The unit µmol/s/m² measures how much light useful for photosynthesis a lamp produces per square meter per second.

This is a better metric for grow lights than standard lumens, because lumens only measure light visible to the human eye. PPFD measures exactly the light that a plant can utilize.

Reference values:

  • Winter sun outdoors: 100–200 µmol/s/m²
  • This lamp at a distance of 10 cm: 399 µmol/s/m²
  • Summer sun at noon: 2000+ µmol/s/m²

399 PPFD is well-sufficient for pre-cultivation and the needs of seedlings — strong plants (tomatoes during flowering) may require more intense light.

Can I use this lamp in a traditional room, or does it require a special grow room?

You can use it in a regular room — for example, on a windowsill, a desk, or on top of a wardrobe. The lamp is designed for home use and does not require a special grow room.

Things to consider for home use:

  • Light color: cool daylight (6400K) can feel quite bright in a home environment. Use a timer to avoid using it at night.
  • Heat: The LED lamp produces very little heat, so there is no issue near plants.
  • Installation: hang or place it using a bracket, e.g., under a shelf or inside a cabinet.

Perfect for windowsills during the winter season when there is little sunlight.

Which plants benefit most from LED grow lights?

The LED grow light is especially suitable for seedlings and plants that need a lot of light to grow:

  • Vegetable seedlings: tomato, bell pepper, cucumber, zucchini, cabbage
  • Herbs: basil, parsley, rosemary, oregano
  • Lettuces and greens: potted lettuce, arugula, spinach
  • Sprouts: germinating shoots and microgreens
  • Houseplants in winter: orchids, palms, monsteras — supplemental light for the dark season

Shade-loving plants (e.g., ferns) that require less light generally do not need supplemental light in home conditions.

What is the actual service life of the lamp?

The nominal lifespan is 35,000 hours. In practice:

  • 14 h daily during the pre-cultivation season: approx. 6.5 years of duration
  • 16 h daily for continuous indoor cultivation: approx. 6 years
  • 4 h daily as supplementary light for houseplants: over 20 years

If you only use the lamp during the pre-cultivation season (February–April) per year, the lifespan can be over 10 years. When the PPFD starts to weaken — usually after more than 25,000 operating hours — plants will grow more slowly, and that is when it is time to replace the lamp.
