Compatibility and installation

Requires a 12V transformer

This is a 12V low-voltage lamp that requires a 12V transformer to operate. The transformer converts the household 230V mains voltage to 12V. You can find compatible transformers (both electronic and magnetic) in our selection under the Electrical accessories → Transformers category.

Check the transformer wattage

The transformer's power must match the lamp (or the total power of multiple lamps). E.g., for one 35W lamp, the transformer must be at least 35W. For multiple lamps, add up the total power and choose a transformer accordingly — it is often advisable to leave a small margin (e.g., two 35W lamps = 70W, choose an 80–105W transformer).

GU5.3 base — two-pin attachment

GU5.3 is a base with two pins (Ø 5.3 mm) that is pushed directly into the fixture socket. Not to be confused with the GU10 base, which is a bayonet-style mount that operates on 230V mains voltage.

Dichroic reflector — cooler beam

The Decostar 51S's dichroic reflector reflects visible light forward while allowing infrared heat to pass through the back of the reflector. This means that the surface being illuminated feels up to 66% less heat compared to a standard halogen lamp. Especially useful in display cases, museums, art lighting, and food displays where heat can damage the object.

Note: the back of the lamp still gets hot — ensure that the fixture is designed to dissipate heat from the rear.

UV filter — protects colors

The UV filter blocks UV radiation that would otherwise fade colors in artwork, textiles, and products. This makes the Decostar 51S an ideal choice for museums, galleries, clothing stores, and display cases.

The lamp is dimmable

This Decostar 51S is 100% dimmable with compatible dimmers. Halogen lamp dimming works with both electronic and triac dimmers. Check that your transformer is dimmable if you wish to adjust the light output.

Installation checklist

  1. Check that the fixture has a GU5.3 base (not GU10)
  2. Check that you are using a 12V transformer with enough power for the total wattage of the lamps
  3. Check that the lamp dimensions (Ø51 × 46 mm) fit the fixture
  4. Turn off the power before installation — do not touch the lamp glass with your fingers (oils can shorten the lifespan)
  5. Install the lamp and switch on the power

Consider an LED option

If energy savings and longer lifespan are important, consider GU5.3 LED spotlights, which use approximately 80% less energy and last up to 25,000 hours. However, halogen retains its advantage with perfect CRI 100 color rendering, which is important for things like lighting artwork and jewelry.

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Does this lamp require a separate transformer?
Yes. The Decostar 51S is a 12V low-voltage lamp, so it requires a 12V transformer to operate. The transformer can be either electronic or magnetic, and its power output must match the total power of all connected lamps. A 35W transformer is sufficient for one 35W lamp; for multiple lamps, calculate the total power. Compatible transformers can be found in the Transformers category.
What is the benefit of a cool beam mirror?
A cold light mirror (dichroic mirror) reflects visible light forward while allowing infrared heat to pass through the mirror backwards. This means that the illuminated surface experiences up to 66% less heat compared to a traditional halogen lamp. Particularly useful in display cases, museums, for illuminating artworks, and in food displays where heat can damage the object. Note that the back of the lamp still heats up — ensure the fixture is well-ventilated.
Why would I use halogen instead of LED?
A halogen lamp's CRI is Ra 100, which is perfect – it produces the most natural color reproduction possible. Premium LEDs achieve approximately Ra 90-95, not a perfect 100. This makes halogen a better option for professional use where accurate color visibility is important: artworks, jewelry, clothing stores, grocery stores, and museums. However, LED is more energy-efficient and long-lasting for general lighting – consider the purpose of use carefully.
Can I dim this lamp?
Yes. The Decostar 51S is 100% dimmable. The halogen lamp dims smoothly without flickering, and the color temperature becomes warmer when dimmed (like an incandescent bulb). Please ensure that a dimmable transformer and a compatible dimmer are used (both electronic and triac dimmers work for halogen lamps). Check the transformer's technical specifications before purchasing a dimmer.
